What’s Google Meet, Anyway?

Think of Google Meet as a virtual classroom. It lets you see and talk to your students face-to-face, even if they’re sitting at home. It’s part of Google Workspace, a collection of tools designed to help schools, businesses, and teams work better online.

In Pakistan, more and more schools, colleges, and training centers are choosing Google Workspace because it’s reliable, secure, and affordable—especially when you get it through CreativeON.

As an official Google Workspace reseller in Pakistan, we help educators and organizations get the right tools at the right price, without unnecessary complexity.

Getting Started: What You Need

Before you jump in, make sure you have these basics ready:

✅ A Google Workspace account (we can help you set this up)
✅ A computer or phone with a camera and microphone
✅ A stable internet connection
✅ A list of students or participants to invite

That’s it. No fancy software or complicated setup required.

Method 1: Start a Quick Meet Right Now

If you need to start a class immediately, without scheduling it first, here’s how:

Step 1: Open Google Meet in your browser (type meet.google.com)
Step 2: Click “New meeting”
Step 3: Choose one of the options:

  • Start an instant meeting – begins right away

  • Create a meeting for later – generates a link you can share

Step 4: If you start instantly, Google Meet will generate a unique meeting link
Step 5: Share that link with your students via email, WhatsApp, or any messaging app

💡 Pro tip: The first time you use Meet, your browser may ask for camera and microphone permission. Just click Allow.

Method 2: Schedule a Class in Google Calendar (The Smart Way)

If you’re running regular classes, this is the best method.

Step 1: Open Google Calendar
Step 2: Click Create or + Event
Step 3: Name your class (e.g., Biology – Monday)
Step 4: Set the date and time
Step 5: Add students’ email addresses in the Guests section
Step 6: Click Add Google Meet video conferencing
Step 7: A Meet link is added automatically
Step 8: Click Save

Your students will receive an email invite and see the class on their calendar. When it’s time, everyone just clicks the link to join.

Customize Your Meeting Settings (Highly Recommended)

Control Who Can Join

Google Meet gives you control over meeting access:

  • Open: Anyone with the link can join

  • Trusted: People in your organization and invited guests can join directly

  • Restricted: Only invited students can join (others must request access)

How to set this up:

  1. While creating the Calendar event, click Video call options

  2. Open Host controls

  3. Under Meeting access, select your preference

  4. Click Save

Use the Waiting Room

Think of the waiting room as a hallway outside your classroom. Students wait there until you let them in.

To enable it:

  • Go to Host controls

  • Turn on Waiting room

  • Approve or deny participants as they join

This is especially useful for keeping uninvited users out.

Sharing Your Google Meet Link

Here are the easiest ways to share your class link:

Option 1: Google Calendar

Students automatically receive the invite when added to the event.

Option 2: Copy & Paste

Copy the Meet link and share it via WhatsApp, email, or SMS.

Option 3: Gmail

Click New meeting in Gmail → Share via email

Option 4: Google Chat

If your organization uses Google Chat, share the link directly in a chat.

Starting Your First Class

Before Class (5–10 minutes early)

  • Open the Meet link

  • Allow camera and microphone access

  • Quickly test audio and video

At Class Time

  • Click Join now

  • Approve students from the waiting room if enabled

During Class

  • Mute/unmute microphone as needed

  • Turn camera on/off from the bottom bar

  • View participants from the sidebar

  • Remove disruptive users if necessary

Ending the Class

  • Click Leave call

  • Or choose End meeting for all to close the class completely

Extra Features That Improve Online Classes

Record Your Class

Some Google Workspace plans allow meeting recording.

To enable it:

  • Go to Video call options → Host controls → Meeting records

  • Turn on Record the meeting

Students will be notified, and the recording will be saved automatically.

Automatic Transcripts

Google Meet can also create written transcripts (on supported plans).

Enable it from:

  • Host controls → Meeting records → Transcribe the meeting

This is great for revision and accessibility.
